"Swing rhythms" in Malinke music
intensive course for advanced players
The particular focus of this workshop will be on the concept of swing
rhythms in Malinke music, which I also refer to as "feminine." We
will explore ways in which these rhythms are grooved, which form of micro-timing
is most suitable for this kind of phrasing and which kind of phrasing
these rhythms call for.
The pace and level of this course are designed for advanced players with a
solid foundation. This course involves acquiring a command of complete West
African djembé rhythms as well as playing solo phrases, grooves and
breaks.
